The Plot
Modern Family is a show that revolves around a family, the Pritchetts, and their daily lives. In season 1 episode 2, titled "The Bicycle Thief", the family is faced with a dilemma when their son, Luke's, bike is stolen. Jay, the patriarch of the family, takes it upon himself to retrieve the bike, and it leads to a series of comedic events.

Meanwhile, Claire and Phil are planning a surprise party for Mitchell and Cameron's anniversary, but they are having trouble keeping it a secret.
The Confrontation
Jay and Manny end up confronting the bike thief, who turns out to be a young boy. Jay tries to reason with him, but the boy refuses to give up the bike. Eventually, the police show up, and Jay and Manny are able to retrieve the bike.
The Surprise Party
Claire and Phil are still trying to keep the surprise party a secret, but it's proving to be difficult. They end up enlisting the help of Jay and Gloria, who distract Mitchell and Cameron while the party is set up. The party is a success, and Mitchell and Cameron are thrilled.
The Lesson
The episode ends with the family back together, and Luke happily riding his bike. The lesson of the episode is that sometimes it's best to leave things to the professionals, as Jay's attempt to retrieve the bike on his own almost ended in disaster.
